| In his speech, Bush called on the
Palestinian people "to
elect new leaders, leaders not compromised by terror." How exactly do you go to the polls while under 24/7 curfew (read as house arrest) and tanks blocking your streets and bullets flying over your head? Even more importantly how are you supposed to make an informed and democratic decision in that type of situation much less find someone in Palestine that isn't "compromised by terror" because at my last look, the whole fucking place was being terrorized by tanks and Israeli soldiers with big guns. Alternatively, if you asked Sharon, every Palestinian is a terrorist so that leaves pretty slim pickings on election day. Is our administration forgetting that Arafat was democratically elected to his position? What makes anyone think that political reform in Palestine will conform to Israeli design or be more willing to waiver on the demands that Arafat has been making? I'm all for global responsibility and helping other countries where we can, be that by military force, economic help or humanitarian aid, but this may be one that we need to sit out of. We are alienating any allies we had in the middle east by our stupid foreign policy of supporting Israel regardless of what they do. We have a moral responsibility to decry what they're doing to HUMANS, and not just cry out for new elections that may do nothing but make the situation worse. In the current occupation I think elections could be the worst thing they could do, more people will be willing to vote for radicals and less likely to find someone willing to deal with Israel on their terms. Sharon claims every time they get close to any kind of treaty that the terrorists screw it up, but to be honest folks, the only people screwing it up is Israel and Palestine. Every time they let the peace process slip back the terrorist groups win, because they want all or nothing and until they get it they won't stop. The only way to stop them is to continue with the peace process regardless of what they do and it will show them their efforts are futile. |
